I had this in my Amazon wishlist for a while, possibly since this entry, but more likely since I wrote "I've never properly listened to any of Cathy Berberian's performances of Berio — must do." On a whim (and because it was very cheap) I ordered it off Amazon six weeks ago. With my holiday intervening since then, listening time has been at a premium, and I've only had one run through of the album.
What I read about Recital I (For Cathy) makes it seem a fascinating piece of proto-post-modernism. The difficulty for me is that it's a piece for "an actress-singer who plays the role of a singer who gives a recital", and that recital singing style is alien to me. At least on first listen. The only points of entry I could find at first were the rendition of Black is the Colour (Of my True Love's Hair) (familiar from a couple of weeks ago) and of Surabaya Johnny (familiar from Dagmar Krause's rendition). It's still early days.
