From the era in the mid-nineties when, thanks to M and her taste in Saturday morning TV, I was vaguely aware of what was in the charts. Since Like a Prayer, I'd been aware of the image makeovers, but hadn't listened much to the music. Now here was some sophisticated pop, tuneful and danceable, with all the right trimmings in the production — and even a mature look for Madonna, which, I admit, I liked.
At this distance I can see what the appeal was, but it's faded. It still makes the stereo sound good, though. In fact, along with Bay City this was one of the CDs I took along to do that test-taste thing at the hi-fi shop last time I got a new CD player.
At the time of its release, this CD was £9.99. It was an eyebrow-raising novelty for a new album, expected to reach the top of the charts, to be priced that low.
