During my rounding up of loose ends and orphan CDs scattered around my shelves, I came across these four CD singles: two samplers for the Readymades album (still sounding astonishingly good), a 2000 re-recording of Enough is Enough from the Anarchy album (against Joerg Haider), and a 1999 ditty whingeing about Tony Blair and the millennium. They came, as bonus gifts, with an order I made for something else from the Chumba online shop.
I swam against the tide on Blair. It's got progressively harder to support him since he's refrained from showing any humility since leaving office, but I think all that opprobrium heaped on him in the wake of Iraq was misplaced — as though any other top-level UK politician of the time, with the possible exception of Robin Cook, would have done things significantly differently. (Not that I don't wish there had been a senior politician prepared to act differently.) I was with J.G. Ballard in the we'll miss him when he's gone camp.
Meanwhile, I've ordered and paid for Chumbawamba's Margaret Thatcher E.P., but you won't get the benefit of my views on her unless she turns up her toes in the next three or four weeks.
