I expected listening to this CD to evoke pangs similar to those I experienced with the 1998 Mercury Prize compilation. As it turns out, I can find something to enjoy in almost all the tracks included. Even the Primal Scream song has its moments, thanks to Augustus Pablo and his melodica. The Spice Girls ask "Who do you think you are?" Evidently they, or their producer, think they're Chic — they're not, but they're listenable in small doses. The only track that does nothing for me is by that band that people like me are supposed to like, from the album that's routinely included in the "best of all time" lists.
