I don't think I've ever listened to this before. Of all the Wire Tappers, it must be the most easy on the ear. Songs! With tunes! Not what you normally expect from The Wire.
Even Matt Elliott (a.k.a. Third Eye Foundation) turns in something with a chorus, and Kid 606's track wouldn't frighten my mum — though it might not impress her, either.
Don't get me wrong: this isn't like drifting along to a Nick Drake album, and there are a few small jolts, but by Wire standards, it's Easy Listening.
I listened out especially to the track by Alexander Hacke, because I like him. Our paths crossed just over three years ago, at a seminar in Vienna. Looking round the room that day, there were no prizes for guessing which person was a member of Einstürzende Neubauten. I guess he could have been intimidating and self-important, but he was the opposite. And, in the final session (on copyright policy, I think), he got a few of us to cross the road to a bar, where he bought us a schnapps. A real gentleman.
To continue the name dropping, that was the same day I got heckled by Feargal Sharkey, in the gentlest possible way.
