I just stumbled on an error in the infrastructure that supports Music Arcades. My random selector had pointed its bony finger at the August 2005 issue of the Word of Mouth covermount CD. I noticed I'd played this CD before in October 2006. Unusual, I thought. Either I listen to a covermount within a month of it arriving, or not at all… until its number comes up for Music Arcades. So I had a quick glance at October 2006 and found that, sure enough, I posted about the August 2005 issue there. To understand what had gone wrong, I searched my database for CDs with the title "Word of Mouth". Only two results. How many CDs with the title "Word of Mouth" on my shelf? More than ten. Uh-oh.
So those Word cover CDs (which were rebranded from "Word of Mouth" to "Now Hear This!" late in 2005) have been underrepresented on these pages. Am I going to correct the error? No. If you've been following the story so far, you know that Word cover CDs don't bring out the best in me. Having to feature more of them won't make anyone happier.
I mark the mistake and move on, confident that — across the five years and 1,800+ posts of this site — other mistakes have doubtless been made, even if they remain undetected so far. Slick professionalism has never been the name of the game.
This Word of Mouth CD was chosen more or less at random as a token to its missing brothers and sisters. Despite the presence of artists I like (The Magnetic Fields, David Byrne, June Tabor), it leaves me feeling, at best, meh.
