Surely it must have occurred to me before that the reason these Word magazine covermounts get on my nerves is that they follow a similar profile to my own tastes and thus show those tastes to be more formulaic than I like to think? Well, if it hasn't occurred before, it has now.
This example is as annoying as most of the others. See, the profile is a more or less accurate reflection of my preferences — you can imagine these tracks being played on the radio programmes that I enjoy (God's Jukebox, the Freak Zone, Late Junction, Jazz on 3, World on 3, Gideon Coe). But it's like someone has made a negative print of my taste, or they've taken a cast of my teeth and what ends up on the Now Hear This CDs is the all the space in my mouth except the bit I value (the teeth), if you follow me. All the songs on my favourite radio programmes that I don't like.
For instance, I like M. Ward, so I had to listen to the track on which he features a second time — because I couldn't believe it was as rubbish as it seemed at first. Yet it was.
Like The Wire Tapper 20 this CD arrived within weeks, if not days, of the Boy's birth. Though it seems I did manage to listen to it at the time: all the tracks were "scrobbled" to my Last.fm library on 9 September 2008.
