This CD has been sitting on my desk, inches from my keyboard, since I opened the July issue of The Wire. But yesterday was the first time I slipped the red band from the gatefold sleeve and put the CD in my iMac.
I've only listened once while working. I noticed some skronky jazz at the start — which is kind of what you expect from behind the old Iron Curtain — followed by death metal in the middle (Last.fm referred to it as avant-garde grindcore, but let's not split hairs). Then it got palatable again. There was one track where I thought, "Hmmm, this sounds reminiscent of the Portico Quartet". Then I saw that it's called Track with Hang, by Gadomski/Mirt — the hang being the signature instrument of the Quartet. So that's a measure of how superficial my appreciation is.
