I told you he'd be back. Schnitzler's original Conal album assumed mythic status for me, as the most unlistenable record in my collection.
I only stumbled across this "sequel" album, released 20 years after the original. I was browsing the Mother West web store for releases by L.D. Beghtol bands Flare and Moth Wranglers, when I saw Conal 2001 in their catalogue. I just had to get it, to see if it surpassed the original.
In terms of unlistenability, it doesn't. Far from it. As I sewed a patch on a pair of old jeans late last Thursday night, in preparation for the weekend's camping trip, I found it a pleasant and occasionally diverting accompaniment. It's burbling along again as I write, and I'm enjoying it, a bit. Particularly the last of the three tracks, which has a distinct arc to it — something I missed in the original.
(As for the camping, it was a distinct challenge with a two-year-old, and all of us felt pretty exhausted by Sunday. We have another trip booked in a few weeks.)
