Standard operating procedure on Music Arcades is for any duplicate copies of albums or singles to share a single entry (for example). I make an exception to this when I have the album in different formats, as these may be different versions bought decades apart (e.g. 1a, 1b) or I may just want an excuse to write about it twice (e.g. 2a, 2b). 69 Love Songs has three entries (1, 2, 3) one each for the original US and UK versions, and one, you could say, for the UK reissue. In fact my random-selection-from-the-collection process picked out a fourth copy a few weeks ago, but even I thought that was too many. Besides, my 69LS collection is fluid, with copies coming and going frequently. I'm not always the ideal host, in the sense that I can't guarantee I'll have a decent malt whisky to offer house guests — but if they happen to be lacking a copy of 69LS, they won't go away empty handed.
The reason this copy of Starless and Bible Black wasn't included in the previous entry is that I had yet to acquire this one. Back in February 2007, I said,
[In] the late '80s…I realised if I was to get a copy of the Tom Phillips illustration that graced the gatefold of this album, I had better get a second-hand copy while I still could. I got this one for £3.50 from Record Collector in Broomhill.
Three months later this sense of urgency was shown to be unwarranted. On a return visit to Record Collector (the same visit where I bought, inter alia, this, this and this) I came across another copy of the same album. It was marked down from £8.50 to £6.00. Maybe I thought, if I bought it, it would make the first one slightly more rare, and thus justify the initial purchase. As it happens, the sleeve of this second copy is in much better condition. Yet the album remains annoyingly unrare.
