M gave me this in 2007, at the same time as Skin. I haven't listened to it much. It's just about OK to discover music via girlfriends — though an objectionable egotism in musical affairs makes me think even there the traffic should be mostly one-way. However, to discover something new via an ex-girlfriend? No chance. So I guess I didn't listen to the CD in case I found I liked it.
I'm kind of reassured to find that it's not really my thing. Beautifully played and recorded, for sure. How come? I count myself as a folk fan. I love Martin Carthy, Alasdair Roberts, Charlotte Greig, Richard Thompson, Spiers & Boden, June Tabor. Yet Kate Rusby, Andy Irvine, Jim Moray, Paul Brady, and The Unthanks (who, like Arcanadh, do a version of Annachie Gordon informed by Nic Jones' recording) leave me unmoved. And I can't put my finger on what the people in the first list have that those in the second don't.
I used to be able to pronounce Irish words like Ceol An Phíobaire, and M taught me various phrases — many of them slushy ones, like A chusla mo chroí, which is all I can remember now.
