My, I was pretty sniffy about Portishead's first album — must have been in a bad mood that day. I'm in a bad mood today — thanks for asking — but not minded to take it out on Portishead this time. Unlike Dummy, I actually bought this one. Then, as now, what I heard and what I read about what I heard, made me think I ought to like it. But I don't much. I listen to a song like All Mine and ponder idly the bits that might sound a bit like Billie Holliday and the bits that may sound a little like old James Bond movie themes. And that's as far as I get in the way of emotional engagement. Portishead, it's not you; it's me. Not that you were going to lose any sleep over that anyway.
