In 1994, around the height of the Nine O'Clock Service in Sheffield, my friend David (mentioned previously 1, 2) told me about some new flyposters the christians were putting up around the city. "They've got an image of Jesus, and then just the words 'Let Love In.'"
It was the last bit that gave it away. "Err, David, that's not Jesus; that's Nick Cave. And Let Love In is the name of his new album."
It feels like Nick Cave's career has crept up on us in the background. This was already his eighth album since the Birthday Party days. There have been about as many again since. When you look back at the full body of work, they really add up to something. Let Love In isn't his best, but it's not at all bad either.
This was the first Nick Cave album I bought. It set the ball rolling on a steady year buying his entire discography.
I still think it's one of his most uniformly excellent albums, along with the Abattoir Blues double and From Her to Eternity.
