£4.99 from Our Price. I guess I bought this a year or two after I got Tin Drum and decided to work backwards through the Japan catalogue. Though I may have streamed Quiet Life and even some of the first albums at some point in the last couple of years, my collection never got further than this.
As with Talk Talk, David Sylvian's Ferryisms sound too blatant and too dated now. Also I hadn't noticed before (thanks to my almost wilful ignorance of Bowie's work around the time I bought this album) that Burning Bridges is a carbon copy of Side 2 of "Heroes", even down to the tone of the saxophone.
Nightporter was the song we all gushed about at the time. Inevitably the Whistle Test performance is on YouTube. But I'm not so sure about it now: it seems only a couple of steps away from the truly gruesome Will You? from the same era, saved only by the sax player's ability to retain some decorum.
