As predicted on Monday, my reporting of the "stupid collections" accusation has not led to my death, yet. I stupidly added Rush Through Time to the incipiently stupid collection about 28 years ago, via mail order from the classified ads at the back of Sounds. I say 28 years because, although Eil.com seems to think it was released in 1978 (and there are no tracks on it recorded after 1977), the back cover shows all the Rush albums up to and including Moving Pictures, released in 1981.
To be honest, I almost didn't listen to this LP at all, as I've devoted much of my 'self-time' this weekend to the latest stupid arrival in my collection, a 40th Anniversary Definitive Edition double-CD-with-DVD-Audio-and-5.1-surround-sound-mixes package. It wasreleased last week, and arrived Recorded Delivery on Friday as I'm on a month's free trial of Amazon Prime to mitigate the effects of the postal strike: I rushed downstairs when the doorbell rang, hoping to avoid Lucy taking receipt of a double-CD-sized package, but failed… It makes me feel like Mojo Man… except, except… my god it sounds good! Even the regular CD version. So good that I even went as far as checking out DVD Audio players. Forget it: there aren't any, at least not below about £500; it's like digital radios were ten years ago, except there's less prospect of prices coming down like they have with digital radio.
More of that album another time. I decided to listen to at least Side 1 Track 1 of Rush Through Time; and I ended up staying for the whole side. Because, you know, it doesn't sound too shabby either. I doubt I ever played the record back in 1981, as I already had all the songs on other albums. I was just (stupidly) collecting it for the sake of the cover, and, more importantly, the bragging rights of owning a rarity (the album was never released in the UK.) Turns out, if Musicstack.com can be trusted, that the smart collector would have gone for the picture disc version, which now commands a premium prices, whereas my version has fallen in value
