And talking of ominous, it's not a good sign when an album doesn't register at all on Scott Walker's discography on Discogs, MusicBrainz or Wikipedia. While I was putting together the links below, I enjoyed this 1-star customer review on Amazon.
When I saw this CD in a car boot sale for 50p I thought I'd struck gold. Sadly that wasn't the case… If it wasn't for the fact that his name was on the CD, I would not have recognize him in a million years… The songs themselves are instantly forgettable… From a collector's point of view, this still isn't worth the purchase.
Well I paid six times what this reviewer paid, at Fopp, but I had fewer expectations about striking gold. Yes, it's tatty, and the sleeve notes admit that through what they omit: not a mention of the songs on the album until the final sentence, "The recordings on this album, dating from the early years of his career, show Scott already beginning his long voyage of musical exploration." Hmmm. It's true they don't sound much like the Scott Walker of renown. But one or two of them sound a bit like Bobby Darin, and that's not all bad.
