I bought this first as a present for C. She went from being contemptuous of the Pet Shop Boys — for no greater reason that they made 'pop' music — to being seduced by the knowing and camp way they carry a tune, and such tunes! There was a review at the time that saluted the almost unprecedented instance of a Greatest Hits compilation on which all the songs are both Great and Hits.
I didn't get my own copy until some years after the end of that relationship; indeed, after the end of the next one. Listening to all 18 tracks is a bit like eating a bag of pear drops: the first one is wonderful, but after the fourth your palate becomes numbed to their distinctive flavour and you might as well be sucking a sugar cube.
