I mentioned that, during Robert Fripp's colloquy in 1985, he just had to mention that he was listening to gamelan music and that was sufficient endorsement to encourage me to get some myself. I'd forgotten that he also mentioned Judy Collins — "beautiful guitar playing by Steven Stills, beautiful", I can hear in my head in Fripp's gentle Dorset burr. And thus…
My problem then was, with it being a compilation album, and having a blank inner sleeve, there were no credits to tell when or whether Steven Stills was playing guitar.
It must be 23 years since I last listened to this record, or heard anything much by Judy Collins, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect — except that late '60s folky woman covering Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Donovan and Jacques Brel; well, I guess had a fair idea what to expect. Twenty three years ago, I might not have known who Sandy Denny was, and this record may have been the first time I heard Who Knows Where the Time Goes? Evidently I needed repeated prompts to realise what a lovely song it is.
