I've always thought of this as my favourite Echo and the Bunnymen album, and the fact that the singer prefers Ocean Rain only further entrenches that view.
Where Ocean Rain comes across like a series of set pieces, Porcupine sounds like a real album where every song makes adds to, and feeds off, the whole. Especially Side 2. Gods Will be Gods and Ripeness, I liked them all. Ten years ago, during the summer of madness, I actually read The White Devil. It probably wasn't a good idea given my state of mind, and morals, at the time — but I didn't really understand it all, so it couldn't have done too much harm.
The Wikipedia page provides much excellent back story to the album.
