I feel a little bit cheated by this album. I bought it on CD, I guess in the late '80s, because I happened on it in a shop — not even knowing it existed until then — and would have cheerfully bought anything with those names on it. And I already had the first Begegnungen. But I didn't know it was a compilation. There are no sleeve notes of any kind and it's only via Wikipedia that I can check that all tracks had been previously released elsewhere. Back then in the shop, decades before iPhones, I wouldn't have remembered the track names even if I had some of the original albums from which this one was compiled. Does anyone remember the names of more than a handful of ambient tracks? Seriously?
For some reason the music doesn't satisfy in the way Begegnungen I did. I doubt that's because it's on CD whereas the other was on vinyl or anything clever like that. More likely to be an issue with the listener and his current mood, a kind of agitated winter blues. The plumbing's blocked, leaving us without drainage in the kitchen, and the Boy has an ear infection for which he's been prescribed his first course of antibiotics: he doesn't like them at all. But I was able to soothe him to sleep in my arms yesterday with the help of the last couple of tracks, Es War Einmal ("once upon a time" if my German hasn't deserted me) and Für Luise (oh, very droll!)
