I was looking forward to rediscovering what this sounded like, because, having bought it when it came out, I don't think I've listened to it in the last 20 years. The surprise is how unsurprising it sounds. OK, the palette of later albums has become both sparser and bolder, and the light funk of Pulling Punches, the opening track of Brilliant Trees, has been pruned back, if not rooted out. But there's no mistaking that it's the same garden: the line of descent between early and late solo albums is clear. A continuous evolutionary arc.
