As you know by now, I'm not much of a singles man. This was the first single I ever bought — though I didn't buy it in person, because I was in school: I sent my mum to buy it for me. (Mum, couldn't you have got the picture cover?!) I did this in the week that the single was No.2 in the charts, with the intent that my proxy purchase might give the single the lift it needed to make it to No.1.
Of course, the W.H.Smiths on Commercial Way, Woking, was not one of the Official Chart shops in those days, so my attempt to influence history was naive and forlorn. But Rat Trap made it to No. 1 that week anyway, culminating in Bob Geldof's notorious desecration of the image of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Is this that performance?
The official Rat Trap video is available on Last.fm, and it doesn't look too bad.
My obsession with the Boomtown Rats lasted only a few months, or maybe just a matter of weeks, either side of my thirteenth birthday. I hated I Don't Like Mondays — still do — and though I've had periodic flashes of affection, it's never been the same.
