This was a mistake, even if it was only a fiver from Fopp. I came across it via a recommendation on Stuart Maconie's Critical List (the dear old Beeb has removed all the original programme web pages which went back to 2001, so all my previous links to them will have broken — thanks).
If I'd listened to the songs that Maconie played instead of his urbane commentary, I'd never have got the CD. Evidently it has plenty of supporters, but it's not my kind of thing at all. Just the rhymes in the first verse of the first song make my stomach turn like a too-sweet pudding left out in the rain.
Clive Selwood who was working for Ward's record label around the time of this, his most successful album, identified Ward in his book as the kind of artiste who, having tasted a little success, wanted everything laid on for him thereafter and wasn't prepared to knuckle down for the long haul.
