Never mind that this album was a disappointment when it came out, I listened to it while bouncing on a big blue exercise ball, positioned between my speakers, with the Boy in my arms. Unchallenging pop music with a regular beat and singalong melodies is ideal for that kind of thing, so this went down a treat.
In the grander scheme of things — if there can be anything grander than bouncing on a ball with your baby son — I guess it's still a disappointment, though.
I see a pattern here.
- John Cale and Lou Reed's first collaboration: radical. Their second collaboration: tame.
- Brian Eno and David Byrne's first collaboration: radical. Their second collaboration: well I've only got round to listening to a few tracks so far, but this evidence, and the reviews, suggest it's tame.
- So Cale and Eno's early collaboration: pretty fierce. This one: yep, there's a pattern.
In Eno's diary he gets cross with himself for the amount of time he wastes fiddling about with Photoshop. If this album cover is typical of the results of your fiddling, well, sir, your ire is certainly justified.
