Somehow I remained ignorant of Damon and Naomi's existence for years after they started putting out records. I would certainly have bought anything by members of Galaxie 500 if I'd known of it — as with Luna — but ignorance was still possible in the 1990s.
So when I finally discovered that D&N were making records, they'd made three. I reckon I must have made the discovery via Andy's wonderful Galaxie 500 site, because I ordered The Wondrous World of Damon and Naomi from Cheap or What the week after I joined his mailing list.
So which album to start with? The smart thing to have done would have been to check the fan polls, in which More Sad Hits always comes out top. However, I'm not sure the polls were published on the web back then. So I knew that I wanted one of the albums that had been produced by Kramer. He produced all the Galaxie 500 albums, and I don't know exactly what a producer does — it seems to vary from case to case — but they all sound so wonderful to me. Beyond that, it probably came down to me preferring the title of The Wondrous World of… to More Sad Hits, and maybe the cover.
Eight years on and I have all the Damon & Naomi albums except one, either on CD or eMusic.com download. Like many of them, The Wondrous World of… has its moments, but when it's all over it doesn't seem to add up to much. My favourite may well be the most recent one, Within These Walls.
