I got off on the wrong foot with this covermount CD for the simple reason that I didn't like any of the songs until two thirds of the way through. The track by Flight of the Conchords (sic) was particularly annoying, and even the ones that I wanted/hoped to like, by Joan as Policewoman and Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, were just so-so.
Things picked up around the time of the Pete Atkin song (I haven't got the full notes with me, but I believe his lyrics are by Clive James). By the sounds of her song Lucklucky, Veda Hille may already be fed up with comparisons to (the much younger but better known) Regina Spektor — though perhaps this song is unrepresentative since Regina doesn't feature in Last.fm's similar artists for Veda. The electronic piece by Skyphone is best of all.
But after those three, the quality takes a nosedive again.
After the high-point of Now Hear This! 35, a 20% interesting:crud ratio is a disappointment. I think they used a different compiler this time. I won't be too rude, as I think he may live not far from me.
