Here's a covermount compilation CD (it came with The Wire) that's even better than the Word one from the day before yesterday. Again it has just the right balance of similarity and difference between the tracks, and some great sequences. What makes it better is just the originality and quality of the tracks.
There's a lovely instrumental set from Track 9 to Track 14. I've never heard of any of the artists or bands involved, but the pieces by Maxence Cyrin and Sickoakes are especially beautiful (even if the former sounds like it's copying Michael Nyman copying Wim Mertens). I want to find out more about them.
As with the Word CD, it finishes on a duff note — in this case in the shape of Sunn 0))). At first I took them seriously on the basis of Julian Cope's recommendation, but a couple of years ago I saw them in Islington with my friend Eric, and it was clear that they were taking themselves much to seriously. The way they kept adjusting their cowls to preserve the right mystique did it for me: I felt a strong temptation to jump up on stage and see if they were ticklish (but I didn't).
Evidently there's a lot more to Domino than just Franz Ferdinand and the Arctic Monkeys. (They licensed 69 Love Songs in the UK, for a start.) I'm sorry now that I was too exhausted to lend an ear properly to the 2003 release in this series.
