As I slotted this CD into the side of my iMac, the Boy stopped crying to gaze wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the iTunes interface as it recognised the tracklisting. Ten seconds later he was crying again. I've already falsified any optimistic theories that there might be a technique to bringing his crying jags to an end: only the random play of trial and error is left. Around Rotar I tried a new position, with him face down, chin between thumb and forefinger, and one leg either side of my elbow. As I stroked the base of his spine with my left hand, he fell asleep. But still I was denied any scope to blog the album, or do anything else remotely productive. Somewhere during Stud or Eutow I began to fall asleep myself. That's risky with a small baby on your arm, so I tried to lie him in his basket. The crying began again immediately. Too tired to do anything about it, I just lay down on the floor next to his basket. Soon he burned himself out and briefly we both slept again, side by side. Then somewhere around Gnit or Overand I snapped to again: had he started crying again, or was it the tell-tale sound of a small vomit that woke me? It was only six hours ago, but these episodes are all blurring into each other.
As with yesterday's gamelans, I had a nagging feeling of having heard this music quite recently. But this time I was able to trace it to the inclusion of Eutow on Ripples of Dub, six weeks ago.
