I seem to remember buying this in a small record shop in Canterbury, which M and I were visiting on a short break over New Year as 1997 turned into 1998. I think this may have been partly to impress Tim, who I think knew the Blood and Fire people in Manchester. And also because everyone likes a bit of dub, don't they?
Last month, in connection with another CD of a different kind of Jamaican music, I was wondering aloud if the days were numbered for these genre-based compilations. This one makes me reconsider my argument. Because if I play Last.fm's dub tag, I get some interesting and slightly erratic selections; certainly nothing as focused, rich and deep as the experience of putting this CD on and just swimming in it.
And swimming is what I do, rather than listening intently. I used to play this as background while working. So maybe not swimming but paddling around in the shallow end, vaguely aware that a deeper more immersive experience was not far away, and enjoying that at one remove. It puts a smile on my face. Enough said.
