How sacrilegious is it to say that I'm no big fan of Otis Redding, and, for the most part, I can take or leave this album? From the accolades it has received, it's clear the problem is with me. Not only that but since I've been told the importance of being on time, I feel some shame for not getting it when it came out (when I was two months old).
Normally I'd take grain and grit over smooth any day of the week, so why is it that I love Sam Cooke while Otis Redding does very little for me? Of course I like My Girl and the cover of Satisfaction is fine, but much of the rest doesn't really move me.
I can't remember why I bought this. It might have been a recommendation from the Critical List radio show. I wondered if it might have been linked to Otis's brief and unconsummated relationship with Buffalo Springfield-era Neil Young, when he was looking for a follow up to Satisfaction and briefly considered releasing a version of Neil's Satisfaction-sound-alike, Mr Soul — but I don't think I knew about that in March 2003 when I bought this.
