I got this about 1987. Keith Jarrett was one of the first non-classical composer-performers whom Radio 3 felt comfortable about discussing on daytime broadcasts (Frank Zappa would have come a bit later). So I tuned it to listen to one such discussion, and I think it was there that they praised My Song as one of his best albums.
It's very pleasant, for sure, but my taste is for more grit. Having said that, I've nothing against smooth jazz, or the ECM sound, in principle; I just find these compositions a little too neat, and the performances a soupçon too sweet.
Though I know to say such things is seen as heresy and philistinism in some quarters, it still feels to that this is the dessert course on jazz's nouvelle cuisine menu.
