George McRae crops up again for the second time in three days, and probably the last time ever in these pages. First it was with Yo La Tengo covering him, now we have Rock Your Baby, which Luna used to cover at their New Years Eve gigs. So there you go: two servings of disco/indie-rock mash-up for dessert.
But really I bought this for the twin pleasures of Charlie Rich's The Most Beautiful Girl, with which you may remember we developed a cult-like obsession in Cosin Court, and The Troggs' Love is All Around.
I always thought that Charlie Rich was more or less a one-hit wonder, but I've been listening to Mark Lamarr's God's Jukebox programme since Christmas, and he had Charlie Rich as a Featured Artist a few months ago. He revealed to me how prolific and diverse Charlie had been across his career — a bit like Bobby Darin, maybe Elvis Costello or Neil Young. I recommend the programme, by the way: I think you'll like it.
As for the rest of the songs, well, they might come in useful if I ever get asked to DJ a wedding for a couple who don't much like music. Which is my way of saying: they won't ever come in useful.
