Terry Callier: Essential, The Very Best of

I bought this five years ago, on a whim, I guess, since it was a fiver from Fopp and this bloke Callier — well, his name rang a bell from somewhere. Sometimes the motivation behind a purchase really is that vague.

Ordinary Joe, I think that was the only song I really recognised when I got the album home. And on a superficial listening, it was the only one that engaged me at all.

Back in summer 2005, Fleur and Richard invited us to go and see Terry Callier at the Jazz Café, so I think I dug out the CD again then. But neither this further listening nor the gig got me hooked.

I can tell these songs are better than I've given them credit for — ars longa, vita brevis et cetera, et cetera.
