These pages have been blissfully free of covermount compilations in the last month or two, but it was inevitable that they would make their return. As per previous form (1, 2), I have to review this collection against my template for Word covermounts:
- Something for the old folks who listen to the Bob Harris show (Eighteenth Day of May and possibly The Long Winters or Amy Allison);
- something continental to show how sophisticated we are (well, yes, it was continental Europe that I had in mind, but I reckon Moondog could count on the sophisticated measure, since he's definitely late night Radio 3 material);
- something from the Camden-NME-indie axis (Broken Social Scene, The Hazey Janes);
- some grown-up pop music à la Magic Numbers (Rilo Kiley);
- some soft female singer-songwriter stuff to chill out and express our sensitive side (Christina Kulukundis);
- something with a hint of dub or rap (but not too hardcore) to show that we can still shake our ass, or at least recognise the importance of others doing so (Coldcut featuring Roots Manuva);
- fill out with the best of the new releases (Sparks);
- and an old classic to round things off (Big Jay McNeely, Dr John).
So I think the formula still holds up on this evidence.
Amy Allison is Mose Allison's daughter. Normally you think of stars' offspring being young pups, but, with Mose turning 80 this year, his daughter may not be far off retirement age.
