I think you put me onto Dave Brubeck. I got this for £2.99 in the CBS Nice Price line. Then soon after I read a jazz commentary that was very dismissive of Brubeck as "jazz for people who don't like jazz" or something like that. Which is true of anyone who takes genre music to a mainstream audience, and not necessarily to be considered sinful. But I was more self-conscious about being in the know then, and the times were less liberal about what people would admit to liking. Anyway, from that point to this I didn't listen to the record.
These days it's fine to admit to liking Acker Bilk and all that trad stuff that you heard about via your dad. So I was looking forward to reacquainting myself with this music.
I like the quirky pieces with the odd time signatures and catchy riffs — Take Five, Unsquare Dance and Blue Rondo…. They all seem to have the drums in the left channel and the piano in the right. But overall the sound and the vibe are just a bit too anaemic for me, and I came round to feeling that that commentary was right after all.
