Extraordinary. I listened to this CD on my iMac last week, and, as so often with this German electronica, it just washed over me, leaving little trace. I was almost on the point of saying just that and leaving it there. Then I decided to give it a spin downstairs on the hi-fi, and was just amazed at how different the whole thing sounded. Not bland any more, but nuanced and sophisticated, with a real depth to the sounds. It must be the bottom end, or whatever.
Though even then, there's a homogeneity to the tracks. Just before I put this on, I played the first three tracks from Fripp & Eno's new album. If anyone were doing a blind taste test next to the first three tracks from this album, I'm sure they'd say that the F&E one was the compilation.
Actually the album seems to be arranged in threes: the first tracks all bear the heavy imprint of dub; the next three are a bit more jazz-influenced. My theory breaks down a bit after that. The Cappablack track actually reminded me a bit of Mantronix or Steinski-era hip hop collage.
