This three-track single is another release from my favourite period of ballboy's work, alongside The Sash…
Past Lovers itself is on The Sash…, but this version of The Angels, a moral tale about devoting your life to whisky and guitars, is unique to this release, and is pretty damn good. The truly special track though is I Lost You, But I Found Country Music, recorded and broadcast live from John Peel's house, and featuring Laura Cantrell. It's a perfect song for Laura to sing, and even the fact that the bit where Laura and Gordon try to sing in harmony is clearly under-rehearsed and goes awry, does little to take away from the charm of its 104 seconds.
The CD cover says the song was first transmitted on 20 December 2003, though the John Peel website says it was 23 December. I think the latter is right, because I remember being at my parents' house, listening to that broadcast of John Peel celebrating what turned out to be his last Christmas.
