Although I never watched Miami Vice, I've been a Michael Mann fan since I first saw Manhunter. Good bit of Tangerine Dream on the soundtrack to that — before their soundtracks became formulaic — as on Thief and The Keep. I'm not sure why I don't have the soundtracks to those films, but I do have this one.
Bearing in mind that this album goes from Einstürzende Neubauten to Lisa Gerrard via Terje Rypdal and Kronos Quartet, it's an incredibly coherent piece of work to listen to — compared with the aural jump cuts and crunching gear changes you get with some soundtracks.
The Passengers' track is very well used in the film, from what I remember. I like the Elliot Goldenthal tracks, too. In fact, it's all round a pretty smart piece of work.
I saw L.A. Takedown on TV once: it's almost exactly the same film, scene by scene, as Heat but without Pacino, De Niro, the same flashy effects — and without the soundtrack.
