In the three weeks since I got the music room set up, I've developed a bad (but quite enjoyable) habit. First I stay up until 1am, until the end of Andy Kershaw, Late Junction or Jazz on 3 on the radio, reading my book and drinking some rooibos tea. Then, instead of going to bed, I turn off the light, put on the headphones (if they're not on already) and listen to some more music in the dark. Just me and my tunes in a little cocoon.
So I put Bewitched, with the intent of just listening to three or four songs, and of course I listened to seven. I love the way the album begins: the first few bars set out the stall for everything that will follow; concise and enticing.
Being in the dark, and not knowing the album backwards (or forwards!), I didn't know what was coming next, but with each track it was "Oh, this one, I like this one". At least until Great Jones Street, which was the first lull.
But then I knew Going Home was next. That's one thing I have memorised: that Going Home is Track 7. Because I love that track, always have. For a week or more after 9/11 I had those words going round in my head:
The Chrysler Building was talking to the Empire State
The Twin Towers were talking to each other
Saying, "All is forgiven, I love you still"
Like the Eva Marie Saint in On the Waterfront effect but not so annoying.
