M gave me this. She was very upset by the Omagh bombing, to which this compilation is a charitable response.
It follows the logic of that other charity-minded Irishman, Bob Geldof, in including just the most popular irish acts of the time — which means that it stretches from U2 and Ash via the causeway of Van Morrison over the marsh of The Corrs and as far as the bog of Daniel O'Donnell. (Geldof himself is excluded by his own rules.)
The only original song on the album that actually addresses what it's about is by The Divine Comedy: "I was born in Londonderry, I was born in Derry City too." M was born there as well, and I remember her singing those lines. As far as I know, she works to this day to make her own contribution to preventing anything like that bombing ever happening again.
