Probably more your cup of tea than mine, this. I came to it via Stuart Maconie's Critical List a few years ago. It wasn't that I fell in love with what I heard on the radio, but Stuart went on about it sufficiently frequently for the album to register in my brain as a classic album. Then the usual chemical reaction occurred: classic album + spotted for £5 in Fopp → purchase. A cheap way, at the time, to get an education.
It would take many more listens than I've given in the two and a half years since then for me to have anything intelligent to say about the album, but I can share a short anecdote from Sid Griffin, who I saw play a solo gig a couple of weeks ago. Sid was backstage after a gig by his old band the Long Ryders at the height of their fame. As he told it, he was enjoying the company of four young women who were impressed by his rock god status. Then the forty-something Gene Clark appeared (it may even have been the same backstage get-together shown in the black and white photo on this page, though the photo notably lacks four young women) and spoke briefly to Sid before wandering off again. Four pairs of eyes followed this unannounced visitor as he left, along with a swoonsome unison "who was that". Confirming this appeal, Gene Clark was recently included in Jude Rogers' list of Hot Hippies. Sadly drink got him early.
