My memories of this are all jumbled up and don't fit with the historical record. Here's what I remember:
- John Peel playing songs from the album on the radio, and saying it was the first time he'd felt able to play a Throwing Muses record for a while (yet it was the follow-up to Hunkpapa — didn't he like that one then?)
- Seeing Throwing Muses the year after The Real Ramona album came out, in Toronto, but being there mainly to see The Flaming Lips, who were supporting them, and leaving well before the end of the Muses' set.
Maybe it does all fit; maybe the problem was simply that my feelings were the opposite of John Peel's. I liked the previous albums, but I was disappointed by this one. I decided that Throwing Muses and I were 'growing apart' and that contributed to me leaving early.
As with Hunkpapa, only more so, I'm surprised to find how familiar these songs sound. More so, because I remember feeling let down by the album, and I thought perhaps I never listened to it very much. Counting Backwards was the only song title I recognised, but I recognised many more of the songs themselves like they were old acquaintances. Not Too Soon, particularly — seems like it must have been on the radio just last week, though I don't think it was.
