Tim gave me this for my 34th birthday. I remember what we did for my 35th/his 45th, but not what we did the year before: probably just went out for a quiet beer (or was that the time I drank myself sick on his tequila, and Maria couldn't get into the toilet as a consequence? no, I don't think so) . Anyway, this is one of my favourite gifts from him, just behind Sextant. I stayed with Tim in Sheffield last night, and took the opportunity to thank him again for these.
It's an unmistakeably French mix of jazz, electronica and 'world' vibes. Somehow it reminds me of the Alice Coltrane/Joe Henderson/Pharoah Sanders spiritual jazz of the 1970s, perhaps as seen through the remix lens of FourTet, but I don't really know if I trust that hunch — I'm only passingly familiar with that stuff.
I know next to nothing about M. Galliano. A quick lesson in messy metadata comes from Last.fm, who have parallel entries for Frederic Galliano, Fréderic Galliano and Frédéric Galliano (this is kind of odd, since, a few days ago, Last.fm seemed able to recognise automatically that the Albert Ayler Trio, the Albert Ayler Quartet and the Albert Ayler Quintet were all subsets of Albert Ayler). None of them have much information, so I turn to my latest online toy, Foxytunes Planet (!), and their profile. Still not much wiser, but there is at least a link to the (very pretty but not easy to scroll) official site. Quelle surprise, he's another jumped-up club DJ.
