I saw the Louis Malle film on BBC2 in the 1980s in the days when they took broadcasting of films seriously instead of just padding out dead time in the schedules. They'd have someone like Derek Malcolm introducing the film, and he'd mention the soundtrack and other things to look out for. I believe Miles knocked off the soundtrack in quick time, just watching a screening of the film's rushes and improvising on the spot.
It was much much later that I bought this CD, which was cheap before the days when most CDs became cheap. I wouldn't call it groundbreaking Miles, but it's very enjoyable, and goes down particularly well on a sunny Sunday morning with an espresso and a good book.
I've just come across, but not yet read properly, this detailed analysis of the interaction of music and image in the film, which includes several clips.
