This is an oddity. Whether it's the selection of the tracks or (as I suspect it may be) the random way they're sequenced, it feels like a hodge-podge and a mess. And what the hell is that Iggy Pop cover of Family Affair doing on this, or any, album?
Warren Zevon followed by Ornette Coleman followed by Joseph Arthur followed by an acoustic string arrangement of Carmina Burana makes no sense. Though in the midst of this melée, Big Star's Holocaust jumped out as particularly affecting.
I would have expected better than this from R.E.M., and I would certainly have expected better from Roy Carr, who is credited (with the equally reliable Allan Jones) with project co-ordination and sourcing. Curious.
