This came out in 1988 and I very much doubt that I've listened to it since then. The fact that I don't like the original Beatles album to which it is a tribute can't have helped.
It was organised by the NME and earns Roy Carr yet another mention on these pages (see his tally). Quite what bands like Hue & Cry and The Christians are doing on it is anyone's guess. I guess they were available. Did anyone ever like them, even in the '80s?
The decent tracks are the ones where the bands just do their own thing with scant regard for the niceties of the original. So well done to the Wedding Present (Getting Better), Sonic Youth (of course! Within You, Without You) and The Triffids (Good Morning, Good Morning). Amazingly The Fall blow it with a much too reverential take on A Day in the Life.
Fans of coincidence, synchronicity and other X-Files phenomena will not exactly revel in the news that this is the second '80s tribute album to crop in a fortnight, following 'Til Things Get Brighter.
