I'm trying to think if there are any other albums that I've bought twice on CD (as opposed to buying on LP or cassette, and then a second time on CD). I think this may be the only one. I bought it the first time in 2000, and then got this copy four years later. It's remastered, which I don't think makes much of a difference, but it also comes in a special gatefold cardboard sleeve, instead of the old plastic jewel case, which is probably what sold it to me. Both copies were only a fiver from a Fopp, and even twice the price would seem good value for such an extraordinary album.
I did kind of kick myself that it took me until my mid-30s to discover this album, but it's also consoling to think that there are still some old masterpieces out there that I have yet to stumble upon. Every song on the first side just hits you as wonderfully fresh. The first two on Side 2 are not quite up to the same standard, but then it comes back in unpredictable style at the end. Brilliant.
