The covermounted CDs are coming thick and fast now. I wouldn't be surprised if, in 2007, they make up the majority of the CDs I acquire. There are 12 a year with my subscription to The Word, about 10 a year with The Wire, another 6 with Music Week. Then there is other subscription music like Unknown Public. Meanwhile my 'regular' CD purchases are gradually being replaced by eMusic.
I'd forgotten where this came from, but Discogs Discogs tells me it arrived with The Wire in 1999 (there was also an earlier one in the series). It's a curious CD, and very unclear what the thinking was behind it. Who or what is it promoting? It seems to be linked to some performances at Newark & Sherwood College (as though someone there talked some money out of the Arts Council and County Council to indulge a hobby project). There's a strand of off-kilter British jazz running through some of the songs, but Phil Manzanera's Latin American singalong in the middle cuts that thread. The Robert Wyatt track is the only one I'd be interested in hearing again.
