I can't remember when I got this. I suspect it would have been late '80s or very early '90s. I resisted the Pet Shop Boys for many years, writing them off as too poppy. But secretly I think I always admired tunes like Rent, and the smart words. Liza Minnelli's endorsement made me take them more seriously, too. I remember buying their compilation for Caroline after she flipped from mocking them to liking them (she persisted in believing that Shopping was actually about shopping — listen, woman), and I think I probably got this around that time.
Much later my friend Paul worked for the Pet Shop Boys as a technician, and through him I got to be on the guest list for their Sheffield City Hall show on my 37th birthday. It was during the period when they discovered acoustic guitars, and I don't think it was them at their best. I would have loved to have seen one of the shows with the Derek Jarman set design, but my focus was elsewhere at the time.
