Kate St John keeps cropping up in different things I'm interested in (see one previous reference). She was in a band with Virginia Astley a quarter of a century ago, she was in Van Morrison's band for a few years, then — at the time of this album — she was on Brian Eno's record label. Then she disappeared off my radar for a while, but has turned up at the Barbican a few times in recent years, playing as part of the house band for the Robert Wilson/William Burroughs/Tom Waits theatre piece The Black Rider, for a Nino Rota tribute evening, and then producing the Daughters of Albion evening earlier this year. The truth is I've always quite fancied her, though I've never met her or anything, obviously.
Anyway, it's an album that's easy to like. I've copied it for at least two girlfriends. Lucy recognised Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour from Françoise Hardy's repertoire immediately. It's good for playing late at night, but can also sound good in the morning. If she were famous, I probably wouldn't like it so much, but I genuinely prefer this to people working in the same area now, like Keren Ann.
